My class and I went on a field trip on January 12th to the Pierce House in Dorchester to learn about Samuel Pierce and the Revolutionary War.
First we watched a slide show about the different stages of the Pierce house (how it looked when it was built and how it changed.) Then we made a time line on a string with papers attached to it on the Revolutionary war.
Next we looked at a section of Samuel Pierce’s journal. Samuel Pierce owned the house while the Revolutionary War was going on. We looked at what he wrote about the Revolution or about everyday stuff. We also got to write with quills and ink. It was very difficult and got really smudged.
Finally we went into the parlor where we saw two tables that were really in the Pierce house when Samuel lived there in the 1700s and other antiques that could have been there. We got to see someone dress up as a minuteman (a soldier that could be ready in a minute) and see what minutemen would carry around.
Altogether, we saw a slide show, made a timeline, read a journal, wrote with quills and saw artifacts. I learned a lot from the field trip and can’t wait to go to another historic house.
